This agreement ensures that your child will receive the best quality preparation and storage of his stem cells in the umbilical cord blood. This includes sending the blood extraction set to you and after the birth immediate transportation of the blood in special, temperature-monitored containers from the maternity clinic to Vita 34 in Leipzig. Then the blood is prepared and preserved in our in-house lab with extensive tests on the mother's blood and the umbilical cord blood. This is how we determine if the umbilical cord blood contains sufficient stem cells and is actually transplantable. All costs incurred with doctors and the hospital during extraction are covered by Vita 34.

In the event of insolvency of Vita 34, there is a special insurance to protect the further storage of the umbilical cord for 50 years following initial storage.

With our cautionary screening, we meet the wishes of many parents to know about health risks as early as possible so they can avoid possible dangers through simple preventative measures. The screening includes important early detection tests for genetically-based intolerances to medications or foods in children.

In this process, genetic material (DNA) is examined for genetic characteristics. These special characteristics, along with outside factors, are causes of intolerances. This knowledge gives you the chance to counter health risks on time with the help of your paediatrician. 

Here we will present you with the five incompatibilities and diseases which the preventative screening tests for:

Medically induced deafness
In case of intolerance to a certain type of antibiotic, there is a danger of loss of hearing. According to statistics, one in 12,000 children is affected by this intolerance.
> If your doctor knows, he can use alternative antibiotics and avoid the loss of hearing.

Lactose intolerance
Intolerance to milk sugar (lactose) is widespread. Every 7th child in Western Europe is threatened by it. If affected children take milk sugar, this can lead to diarrhoea, wind, colic or even severe bladder infections.

AAT deficiency
If the body’s own inhibitor, AAT, is not present in sufficient amounts, this can lead to problems with the immune metabolism. The consequences are severe damage to the liver and lungs. One in 2,000 children suffers from the most severe consequences of AAT deficiency.
> If the deficiency is detected early it can be covered with AAT medication. In combination with other preventive measures, the limitations and results can be avoided.

Coeliac disease (gluten intolerance)
Intolerance to wheat flour (gluten) can lead to stomach pains, vomiting, weight loss and respiratory infections, even to diabetes, arthritis and Crohn’s disease among other complaints. The risk of this type of intolerance is 1 in 200.
> With a gluten-free diet the symptoms and resulting illnesses can be avoided.

Haemochromatosis (iron overload disorder)
If there are elevated levels of iron in the blood, excess iron is deposited in tissue and organs, resulting in serious damage to organs (such as the liver). One in 350 children is affected by this illness.
> With early diagnosis, prompt therapy can prevent quality of life from being affected.

> HLA typing (identification of tissue markers)
For the stem cells to be used with another person, the tissue markers (HLA markers) must be compatible. If the umbilical cord blood is used for another family member, Vita 34 carries out the necessary HLA typing.

If you use our storage service again within five years, we guarantee you the same price for an unaltered service, regardless of price changes that may have occurred. After the first time you use our storage service, we also show our appreciation for every subsequent time you use our storage service with a loyalty bonus of EUR 150 which cannot be combined with other discounts.

> Increased cash payment in case of cancer therapy
If your child needs a stem cell transplant during the first 20 years of his life, we will provide you with fast and unbureaucratic help. If the stored umbilical cord blood is used for cancer therapy, you will receive EUR 7,000 immediately. You can use the full amount as you decide – without any need for verification or receipts. This means that at least you won’t have to worry about the expense if you want to travel along for your child's treatment, for example.
